The University of California Natural Reserve system spans 41 sites across the state and is the largest network of scientific field stations in the world. The inaugural cohort of Unseen California artists includes Aspen Mays, Dionne Lee, Karolina Karlic, Mercedes Dorame and Tarrah Krajnak. In 2021, they were invited by Unseen California co-founders Karolina Karlic and Joseph Gallegos to take part in a multi-year research initiative in which the artists began an open-ended engagement with the reserves as sites of dynamic exchange with the land and with each other.
This exhibition is curated by Aspen Mays.
The discussion will center on the artists’ experience as the an inaugural cohort of the arts research initiative Unseen California. This event includes the launch of a limited edition portfolio of risograph prints by the imprint theretherenow and Unseen California.
