Arts Practice and Research – Implementation Grants

These highly competitive grants support specific projects that will enhance the national and international prominence of the arts at UCSC and increase the quality and vitality of research or creative work in theory, scholarship, and/or practice in the arts. Implementation grants are offered to artists, scholars, collaborative teams, and centers to move their ideas from planning into practice. Implementation grants support the final preparation or research that will enable the public presentation or engagement component of the work. Applicants for implementation grants should have already finished most of the planning for their projects, including the identification of the key themes, relevant scholarship, partner artists/organizations, advisors, and program/presentation formats.

Award amounts will range from $5,000-$20,000 depending on the scope and needs of the project. Applicants must show evidence of other funding contributions, or pending (i.e. submitted) extramural applications. Open to Arts Division faculty.

Evaluation Criteria

In the project description on the application form, the applicant should detail the specific anticipated outcome(s) of the grant and should specify how the proposed project relates to the overall direction of his/her research and productivity. The committee will consider the quality of the proposal and its potential contribution to the field, potential impact (local/national/international), as well as the faculty member's record of publication, exhibition, production, or other creative work. Additional considerations will include:

  • Ability to secure funding from non-ARI sources (Has the applicant applied for external money for this or other research projects? Have other sources of funding besides ARI been considered?)
  • The likelihood of timely completion (Is the proposal realistic and well-thought-out? Does the applicant's record indicate that the project will be completed? Has an exhibition/performance venue been secured or a publisher been identified?)
  • Fiscal responsibility (Is the budget reasonable? Are the figures reliable?)

Other Requirements:

  • Applicants for ARI funding must have applied for COR funding.
  • Researchers may not apply for more than one Arts Practice and Research grant at a time, as the committee weighs feasibility of completion among its criteria for funding.
  • Late or incomplete applications will not be forwarded to the committee.
  • Funding will not be carried over after the one year limit (18 months for awards made in the Fall). Any unspent funds will automatically revert to the ARI.
