Collaborative Research

These awards are intended to encourage collaboration beyond the confines of particular departments and disciplines, both within the arts and between the arts, humanities, social sciences, and sciences. The award supports collaborative work whose interdisciplinarity is essential to the project’s conceptualization and that draws upon techniques, methodologies, and media from multiple disciplines for its execution. Up to five awards will be made to support collaborative projects. Ladder rank faculty, lecturers, and staff with PI status may apply for these awards. Open to faculty from any department. Awards range from $500-$5,000. Visiting Artists and scholars may also be proposed in this category.

Eligible projects include:

  • research clusters, conferences, symposia, exhibitions, and performances at UCSC or in the local community
  • partnerships with another faculty member, teaching artist, or community organization
  • creation of an interdisciplinary, cross-departmental or cross-institutional component for a remote or in-person course (funds cannot be used for stipends for course instructors-of-record)
  • initiatives to bring visiting scholars and arts practitioners to campus for collaborative research (where appropriate, such scholars may be appointed ARI Visiting Fellows)*

Evaluation Criteria

The project description should:

  • state the objectives, ideas, and methodology of the project
  • discuss the project’s significance and originality with reference to current scholarship and/or arts practice
  • specify the interdisciplinary scope of the project, if appropriate 
  • include a timetable and work plan
  • define the project’s target audience(s) and the form(s) in which the research will eventually disseminated (e.g. book, article, art exhibit, performance, etc.)

Other Requirements

  • Applicants for ARI funding must have applied for COR funding.
  • Late or incomplete applications will not be forwarded to the committee. 
  • Funding will not be carried over after the one year limit (18 months for awards made in the Fall). Any unspent funds will automatically revert to the ARI.​

Grant Timeline:

Fall Application Deadline: November 15, Annually

Individuals will be informed about funding in late December and ​grants commence January 1

Spring Application Deadline: April 15, Annually
